Slime Sam always tries to find a new answer to the question What to do when ur bored? He eats candy, watches cartoons and movies for kids, helps Sue with crafts and recipes, plays with a cat and so much more! But the best DIY activity he's discovered so far is cardboard crafts! Sue got him hooked so badly that he keeps begging her for new cardboard ideas! It all started with a candy machine, then there was a creative labyrinth for their pet rat and now Slime Sam and Sue are making a DIY flipbook animation machine from scratch! It's like a real-life GIF or cartoon that you can touch, an amazing idea that will wow all of your friends.
For this craft you will need:
- extra thick corrugated cardboard;
- PVC tubing;
- hot glue;
- a student compass;
- a ruler;
- wooden skewers;
- printed images for the future machine (we chose a short animation with Bart Simpson listening to music in his headphones, but you can use any video with any characters you like).
Guys, it's really important that safety comes first! Always ask adults for help when working with sharp objects or hot glue! And let them have fun too;)
It's an easy and simple cardboard craft but it includes a lot of small details and you have to really pay attention to the video. Watch the video first to get an idea of what you'll be doing, then prepare all tools and supplies and get down to business!
This cardboard machine will take quite a lot of time to make but will be totally worth it, we promise.
If you have other ideas for creative cardboard DIYs please let us know! We'll definitely take them into consideration and might make a video out of it!
This cardboard animation flip book actually quite accurately represents how cartoons are made.
People wanted to capture the wonder of motion since very early ages. The earliest examples are the cave paintings and images on ancient pottery bowls, can you imagine?!! More modern examples go back to the 19th century and that's when the first animation devices are thought to appear. You know very well one of those devices, it's a flipbook! Just like the one you make yourself in a notepad when bored at school, right! The main principle of any animation is a lot of drawings that follow each other so fast that your eyes are tricked into thinking that it's one motion picture. Cartoon artists needed to draw THOUSANDS OF PICTURES to make a 20-minute cartoon just 20 years ago! That's just crazy how much work, effort and time used to go into the cartoon production! Of course, nowadays this process is so much easier and faster with the computers and modern technologies, but it still requires artists to draw a lot of images. One cartoon production can take many months!
Flip books are also called flick books. A flipbook is a book with pictures on each page that vary gradually from page to page. When the pages are turned rapidly pictures start animating and simulate motion. This simple idea has been around for generations because it's so entertaining and easy to handcraft. A lot of kids books and magazines are illustrated with this kind of animation and you can even find whole animation books dedicated to this purpose. Flipbooks are popular among photographers that can create one-of-a-kind picture series using this simple technique.
Kids are curious experimentators by nature and they are always down for some DIY action. It might not seem like it in our modern world of phones, iPads, and computer games but it's always adults' responsibility to wake and encourage this natural curiosity and thirst for new knowledge and discoveries and help them along the way. It's so rewarding to see how kids develop, acquire new skills and become smarter while doing something with their hands. Don't overestimate the school system and extracurricular activities for kids. They're great and by definition are meant to make kids interested in their environment. But nothing will be as helpful to their development as some family fun! Start with this really simple and fun handicraft and teach kids about animation, how to make the most out of simple objects and how to have fun without staring at the screen.
